What is a HEPA Filter?

– HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air.
– It is a high efficiency air filter made of various fibres that trap airborne particles as they pass through.
– Developed during World War II, initially for potential use in case of radioactive outbreaks, they became commercially available and have since evolved.
– Used in respirators, aircraft, hospitals, clean rooms, and various industries.

What do HEPA air filters remove from the air?

– HEPA filters provide the highest level of filtration, removing over 99% of particles down to 0.3 microns in diameter.
– They efficiently remove common allergens such as dust, pollen, and mold spores, as well as smaller particles that can be harmful when breathed into the lungs.

How HEPA works?

– HEPA filters consist of densely compacted fiberglass padding forming a mesh structure placed around the air suction duct.
– They work through interception, impaction, and diffusion:
– Interception: Particles stick to the fiber mesh.
– Impaction: Larger particles collide with the fibers and are retained.
– Diffusion: Smaller particles collide with gas molecules, reducing their velocity and allowing them to be trapped by the mesh structure.

HEPA filters thus provide effective air purification by capturing a wide range of airborne contaminants, making them essential in various settings to maintain clean and healthy air quality.
